So, I started thinking about it and I realized that I never posted here the original letter that I sent out to family and friends regards the January event, SO....here it is!!
One in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in her lifetime and nearly 60% of women regard hair loss as the single worst side effect of cancer treatment.
I think it is nearly impossible to find someone who has not been personally touched by the devastating effects of cancer. My personal experiences include: loss of a beloved co-worker in the past year, diagnosis of another co-worker during the last months, another dear friend and co-worker who will live out her life with cancer as a chronic illness, a grandmother who underwent a double mastectomy almost 25 years ago!, a cousin with thyroid cancer, multiple friends/acquaintances at our church, and I, myself, am a survivor of 17 years.
While my cancer treatment did not involve the loss of my hair, I was struck recently while talking with a friend at work who had recently been diagnosed with breast Cancer. Alonez was talking about her plan of treatment and began talking about her hair. It had been suggested to her that she cut her hair before treatment began--that would be easier for her than waking up and finding large amounts of it on her pillow or just having it come out in pieces in her hand. As women, we do treasure our hair, don't we? It speaks so much to our personality....it can express how much time we had had that morning to get ready, how "sassy" we are feeling that evening, and so on.
With this in mind, I decided to grow my hair out for donation to be made into a wig for women going through this experience. I came upon the Pantene Beautiful Lengths website (http://www.beautifullengths.com/en_US/index_home.jsp) and my vision quickly grew!!
After reading that it takes six 8 inch ponytails to create one wig, I didn't feel like I could, or should! stop with my one little ponytail. SO.....
The date has been set!! On Sunday, January 11th, 2009 there will be a ponytail cutting event at Valley Mills Christian Church in Indianapolis. The goal: a football field length of ponytails to send to Pantene Beautiful Lengths to be used to make wigs for women undergoing cancer treatment. That is 450 ponytails!! I NEED YOUR HELP!!!
Things I need help with:
I NEED YOUR PONYTAIL!
Planning and organizing the event
Collecting donations
Recruiting stylists and event workers
THE LIST GOES ON!!
I'm really excited about this, albeit, feeling a bit overwhelmed! If you are willing to help in anyway, PLEASE let me know!! It could be as simple as taking flyers to your salon or around your neighborhood. Also, if you are growing your hair for the event, I am going to start making a list of names and contact information so we have some idea of where we stand with our goal.
This will still be football season, right? So, I would LOVE to play off of that with the COLTS--GO COLTS!!
Please pray for this event, for the lives that will be touched, and for all women and families touched by this devastating disease!!
